During @EP_SingleMarket hearing, @ThierryBreton revealed that after sanctioning Sputnik and Russia Today, 30% of Facebook's bandwidth had been freed.
These social media algorithms are actively pushing disinformation and hatred.
We should ban these polarising algorithms.

The normalisation of anti-LGBTI sentiments by right-wing politicians in the political arena needs to be stopped, and we need to ban polarising algorithms that spread online hate.

Hate against us is on the rise, increasingly leading to violence and even murder and suicide.

We need to take this extremely serious and fight the root causes of hate speech.

🎉 WE DID IT!

We beat Uber's aggressive lobby! The European Parliament just adopted our proposal to end fake self-employment and protect people against intrusive algorithms.

This is a huge step for the millions of platform workers in the EU. ✊

This is one of the many examples of the company's aggressive lobbying.

Whether millions of platform workers will have a right to a minimum wage, sick pay and protection against black box algorithms, depends on next week's vote.

The far right is moving from their online rabbit holes to the offline world, driven by disinformation and amplified by social media algorithms.

The EU cannot be naive in current geopolitics.
Defend our democracy with:

- Strong rules on disinformation
- Ban polarising algorithms

We need to talk about #TikTok.

The Chinese version is very different than the one in the West. We are highly concerned about the addictive algorithms of Tiktok. Profiling our children. Risking to undermine our society in the long run.

Great news for the millions of platform workers in the EU! Despite aggressive lobbying from Uber, the EMPL committee has agreed its position on a directive to end fake self-employment and black box algorithms. If adopted, they will finally have the same rights as other employees!

And as if this is not bad enough already, they are constantly monitored and managed by black box algorithms. They don’t know why they get certain tasks or prices and are sometimes even fired without any explanation.

Uber's business model is based on the exploitation of workers. Claiming that their drivers and riders are self-employed – which they are clearly not – Uber circumvents minimum wage and social protection laws. As a result, workers are underpaid and have no social protection.

Still in our online public space, online platforms’ profit-driven algorithms continue to amplify online hate and disinformation, because that’s what people click on most.

51% of women hesitate to express their opinion online due to fear of online hate.
Increasingly women do not want to enter politics.
This strikes the heart of our democracy. We can only speak of democracy if everyone can participate safely, freely and equally. 3/

Women do not only experience more hate and violence offline, but also online.

This affects individuals, but also our freedom of expression.

It's time to build a feminist internet, by banning toxic algorithms and including online harassment in gender-based violence legislation.

Our proposed fundamental changes that didn't get a majority:
❌Turn dangerous personalised algorithms 'off' by default
❌ A total ban on all data collection and microtargeting for ads
❌ A European Platform Supervisor for strong enforcement of the biggest platforms (3/3)

Our wins:
✅ It's no longer up to platforms alone what gets taken offline.
✅Mandatory transparency of how their algorithms work.
✅A ban on endless cookie choices and manipulative designs
✅A ban on collecting data on our political preferences, sexuality or health for ads. (2/3)

It is good news the @EU_Commission finally proposed new EU law to better prorect platform workers.

We are happy they included our solutions, such as the rebuttable presumption of an employment relationship with the reversal of the burden of proof.

The proposal sets boundaries on algorithmic management by including:
👉 Transparency and consultation of platform workers on the algorithms that manage them.
👉 Prohibition of constant monitoring when endangering physical and mental health.

@FrancesHaugen Insights:

1⃣ Transparency of recommender algorithms is perfectly feasible. Thus not an unreasonable request for platforms at all.
2⃣ An opt-out option for users is not the magic solution against toxic algorithms. There are safer ways, but we shouldn't let Big Tech decide.

For more accountability, we need to know what goes on online & give users back control.
