The rules as proposed will allow platform workers, labour inspectors and trade unions to challenge fake self-employment. In that case, it will be up to the platforms to prove that they work with truly independent workers free from their control.

And as if this is not bad enough already, they are constantly monitored and managed by black box algorithms. They don’t know why they get certain tasks or prices and are sometimes even fired without any explanation.

Higher labour mobility (due to of digitalisation + Covid) already created a race to the bottom in income taxes. Experts, including @delaFeriaR are warning us, but EU remains reluctant to address this

We must defend human rights globally, and we need to ensure that products made by forced labour don’t end up on the EU market. I expect the presentation of an effective trade instrument to enforce this. @EP_Trade has a clear position: no forced labour products on our EU market!

Commission proposes to strengthen the rights and mobility of migrants permanently living in EU. Vital for their integration and the internal market. Commission also encourages Member States to step up labour migration; the only sensible way forward.

I am committed to getting RBC legislation in place, which would oblige companies to tackle abuses such as forced labour and pollution. We have our own responsibility, if Europe does not act fast enough. That is why the Netherlands will introduce national legislation on RBC.

I am committed to getting ICSR legislation in place, which would oblige companies to tackle abuses such as forced labour and pollution. We have our own responsibility, if Europe does not act fast enough. That is why the Netherlands will introduce national legislation on ICSR.

And the proposal is a major breakthrough on algorithmic management! Something I fought hard for in the Parliament. An important step is taken towards creating a new category of digital labour rights for the 21st century. We must stop the constant surveillance of workers. (3/5)

Good that we stand up against big platforms that trample on workers’ rights and that the EU Parliament’s demand to introduce a presumption of employment is in. It will be up to the platform to prove that someone working for them is truly self-employed. (2/5)

The @EU_Commission will present its proposal on platform work next week. With colleagues, trade unions, and 5 EU labour ministers I am calling for:
- Access to fair working conditions through employment status.
- Rules on fair and transparent algorithms.

Awareness is not the issue:
Everyone knows #SeasonalWorkers are being exploited on a daily basis in the meat industry, agriculture or logistics.

We need acts:
- revise the Temporary Agency Work directive
- propose the EU Social Security Number
- strengthen labour inspectorates

This year’s State of the Union? Started too self congratulatory on Corona (global vaccination!), but tone got better, certainly while addressing rule of law and media freedom. Some good progressive proposals (domestic violence, forced labour, media freedom). (1/2)

Platformworkers in court are fighting an uphill battle. We, the lawmakers, need to step in.

Digital labour platforms shouldn't create rules but should respect our social system based on solidarity.

Happy with the proposals under discussion in the 🇪🇺Parliament.

This never again, is what we said after the Rana Plaza disaster. However, eight years down the line, and the situation is still not good enough.

Bangladesh has to step up it's act and walk the talk:
- end child labour
- no trade union repression
- have a safe workplace

Bangladesh is keen on getting promoted from an EBA status to GSP+ in the near future. If they truly want to, they have to show a true commitment to improving labour rights and human rights, as they are not just window dressing.

Workers’ rights should be protected at all costs.
It is unacceptable that S Korea is not upholding the labour commitments in their trade agreement with the EU. Today I asked the #CTEO how the @EU_Commission will react to these findings. Follow-up actions are needed!

Dat staat er duidelijk: “member states are responsible for deciding on the number of persons they admit for labour purposes”(p.25). Dus Nederland gaat hier gewoon zelf over. Een EU-kader kan lidstaten wel helpen het talent dat ze nodig hebben ook echt aan te kunnen trekken 10/16

Het gaat hier om “residence permits for employment purposes”. Dus gewenste werknemers die door lidststaten uitgenodigd worden om hier te komen werken. Er is geen EU-bevoegdheid om iets op te leggen of aan te sturen 9/16

#China is systematically oppressing the #Uighurs. They are forced to do labour including possibly the production of our masks and clothing. I asked the @EU_Commission if they can deny that these products flow onto our market and if not, what they will do about it.

Cross-border and seasonal workers are not disposables!

We need:
- strict rules for temporary agencies in a revised directive
- norms for decent housing
- more labour inspectors and enforcement

I trust that @NicolasSchmitEU will come up with strong proposals!

Important issue for EU-Georgia: protecting rights of workers by anti-discrimination legislation, social dialogue & a robust labour inspection.

I hope that all progressive parties, including ruling party Georgian Dream, will support this bill.
