Since local elections, Turkish government started replacing elected mayors. @suleymansoylu now threatening Istanbul’s @ekrem_imamoglu

If they remove him, this will have very serious consequences for EU-Turkey relations. Better think twice before acting.

Mayor of Istanbul criticizes replacement Kurdish mayors Mardin, Diyarbakir and Van. I assume every democratically elected mayor in Turkey thinks the same (even if they don’t dare to say it).

Ekrem İmamoğlu (International) Mon 19 Aug 2019, 09:39

It is impossible to associate the removal of Diyarbakır, Van and Mardin Mayors with democratic practices. The three mayors who are replaced by state-appointed trustees were elected by popular vote in the March 31 local elections. Ignoring the will of the people is unacceptable.
