Welcome decision to lift state of emergency in #Turkey. It was the cause for many serious violations of fundamental rights last two years. However, if proposed new anti-terror law goes through, whole gesture was merely symbolic.

Council Conclusions ↘️ The Council notes #Turkey has been moving further away from the EU. Accession negotiations have therefore effectively come to a standstill and no further chapters can be considered, and no further work towards the Customs Union is foreseen.

The (preliminary) result shows political opposition in Turkey is resilient. This means there is still a strong base for democratic change in Turkey. The EU must take into account that Pres. Erdogan is not the only counterpart.
