In het debat over het ratificeren van het Istanbul Verdrag door de hele Europese Unie, konden we uiteraard rekenen op conservatieve collega’s die extreme ideologieën verspreiden.
Maar over het echte probleem wilden ze het niet hebben: geweld tegen vrouwen.

Ordo luris thinks it’s a good idea to oppose the EU’s accession to the Istanbul Convention, therefore opposing mandatory efforts by member states to prevent violence against women. Already asked @EP_President to remove this organization from our transparency register.

Geweld tegen vrouwen en meisjes is een van de hardnekkigste mensenrechtenschendingen vandaag de dag. Het is onaanvaardbaar dat nog niet alle lidstaten de Istanbul Conventie geratificeerd hebben.

Als een schip van Roemenië naar Rotterdam vaart en ze maakt een tankstop in Istanbul, omzeil je enerzijds de afschaffing van de accijnsvrijstelling (want haven buiten de EU) en anderzijds betaal je maar 50% van de ETS (het is nu een intercontinentale route).

De uitvoering van het Verdrag van Istanbul heeft een grote impact op het leven van vrouwen en meisjes in Europa en daarbuiten. Het draagt bij aan bewustwording van geweld tegen vrouwen en zorgt voor nationale wetgevingen om dit te voorkomen.

Nu over tot de orde van de dag: @eucopresident en @vonderleyen te gast over de Europese Raad en t bezoek aan Turkije. Goede reactie van Commissievoorzitter Von der Leyen op wat haar overkwam in Ankara. Ze wil dat ook de EU toetreed tot het Verdrag van Istanbul.

Wat een mooi bericht uit Istanbul: de democratie zal altijd zegevieren. Dat bleek al een beetje bij de EU verkiezingen: de middenpartijen zijn immers terug. Laat dit een waarschuwing zijn voor alle (rechts- en links) populisten, semi-dictators en wat we allemaal nog meer hebben.

Heel blij dat @ekrem_imamoglu verkiezingen Istanbul heeft gewonnen. Niet alleen goed nieuws voor Istanbul en Turkije. Maar ook omdat het aantoont dat zelfs wanneer de instituties van een land door populisme zijn aangetast het mogelijk is democratisch de democratie te herstellen.

Weer pakkende “Brief uit Istanbul”/Bülent Mumay/FAZ. “Met dreigementen wil Erdogan verhinderen dat over feiten wordt gesproken: de werkloosheidscijfers zijn geëxplodeerd. Jeugdwerkloosheid steeg tot boven de twintig procent.” Grootste staatsinvestering: 41 nieuwe gevangenissen.

Wee, de journalist/kunstenaar in Turkije die de herhaling van de verkiezingen in Istanbul durft te kritiseren, aldus Bulent Mumay/FAZ. Dat kom hem/haar op “registratie” te staan... En zo kregen conservatieve journaliste Ayse Baykal en zus ontslag bij stadsproject gehandicapten.
