Gas prices continue to fall this morning, now just 5% above last Friday's levels (before full cut-off of #NordStream1), and much lower than Monday-Thursday last week. This is not a guarantee against shortages in the winter, but it is a relief for gas & electricity prices.

Inzet is duidelijk nu: of we geven Putin zijn zin (en hij zal niet bij Oekrainie stoppen) of we koppelen onze energieafhankelijkheid helemaal los van Rusland. Dat laatste vraagt om echte Europese samenwerking en een solidaire herverdeling.

After 9 August 2020 Lukashenka became even more relentless, more cruel. Many more political prisoners were taken and free media and ngo’s were closed. In addition Lukashenka is fully complicit to Putin’s war crimes in Ukraine and must be treated accordingly. #StandWithBelarus 2/2

@robdewijk De vijfsterren-beweging is sterk verdeeld. Al lang ook. Dit zat er sowieso aan te komen. Ruzies om geld zijn van alle tijden. Dat steunpakket zal voor nog veel meer verdeeldheid zorgen. In heel de EU. Putin is nu gek genoeg juist de verbindende factor binnen de EU.

@FrankvdF @robdewijk @nrc Hangt er vanaf. Als je de oorlog snel wilt beëindigen (wat denk ik voor iedereen het beste is) moet je met Oekraïne en NAVO scenarios doorspreken. Daarna met Putin om tafel. Weten welke uitkomst je na streeft en tegen welke prijs dus wat je er voor over hebt.

@robdewijk @nrc De EU was hopeloos onvoorbereid op een oorlog met Putin. En nog snapt men niet dat men met drie nul achterstaat. De Commissie leidt de lidstaten af met “Green Deal geneuzel” terwijl we serieus gevaar lopen. De oorlog én de gevolgen moeten nu prio 1 zijn.

@robdewijk Gezien het feit dat Putin vanaf (in ieder geval ) 2014 deze oorlog aan het voorbereiden is,vermoed ik dat hij alle scenario’s heeft doorgelopen en voor elke zet van het Westen verschillende opties klaar heeft liggen. Zijn lage staatsschuld, grote goudvoorraad geven hem de ruimte.

During our meeting with the BiH presidency, we expressed full support to BiH's EU future. But we also told Mr Dodik very clearly that he cannot continue his secessionist policies, actively support Putin's war in Ukraine while at the same time advancing on the EU path.

NL kan twee dingen doen:
1. Tegen beter weten in dwarsliggen. Dat speelt Putin in de kaart. Verpest de verhoudingen met de rest van EU en levert ons in de toekomst (als het veto wordt afgeschaft) in EU-raad voor jaren een slechte onderhandelingspositie op.

Op de EU-top volgende week heeft Macron de handen vrij. De laatste verkiezingsronde in Frankrijk is zondag. Frankrijk en Duitsland geven de doorslag. De Raad besluit dus waarschijnlijkheid dat Oekraïne het kandidaat lidmaatschap van de EU krijgt volgende week.
