While the EU works towards an energy embargo on Russia, Serbia PM Vucic calls his friend Putin to sell his country’s allegiance for some cheap gas. Vucic’s alignment with 🇷🇺 is not only disgraceful: it’s a huge (security) threat to the whole region.

@nb__76 @ajboekestijn @lexhoogduin @nytimes Ik ben het met je eens. Het is aan Oekraïne zelf. Een wijze beslissing maken en deze uitvoeren zal geen makkelijke opgave zijn. Putin heeft zichzelf overigens zo beschadigd dat op geen enkele wijze nog een beloning mogelijk/denkbaar is.

First huge problem: the ban deliberately excludes energy imports. That’s an enormous omission. Because the single most valuable product Russia ships to the EU is oil.
 
EU oil imports sponsor Putin’s war machine for more than a quarter BILLION euros a day.

Having seen the heinous crimes in #Bucha and beyond, Commission President @vonderleyen rightfully proposes new #sanctions on Putin and his henchmen. Among them is an import ban on Russian coal - another 4 billion Euros which will no longer fund the Russian war machine.

Vucic’ victory is dramatic news for citizens’ rights, rule of law, the fight against corruption, and unity against Putin. The Commission must step up support to minorities, independent courts and media and protect other Western Balkan countries against this divisive influence.
