Always good to welcome friends of the Macedonian Parliament @SobranieRSM to Strasbourg. We discussed how to support and guarantee a smooth EU integration process of the country.

Hopefully Macedonians can be welcomed in this house as MEPs instead of guests as soon as possible.

+1In 2021 Hungary introduced its anti-LGBTI law. Finally the EU Commission is taking action by bringing Hungary to court.

Together with my colleagues I'm calling on all EU-countries to join this case. To show Orbán that there's no space for hate and discrimination in the EU.

Luister terug naar gesprek over Sunak’s onrechtmatige en onuitvoerbare plan om migranten zonder enig onderzoek weg te sturen. En over Rutte’s gedroomde deals met Afrikaanse landen. Hij normaliseert niet alleen het extreemrechtse gedachtengoed van Meloni, hij draagt het zelf uit.

The worrying decision by the RS government to criminalise defamation seriously shrinks the space for media and damages the Rule of Law. This cannot happen in an EU candidate country.

The government should be urged to withdraw this decision. EU funds to RS should remain frozen.

But civil society & legal experts are fighting back! Instead of the Polish government’s sham reforms, they have draft laws ready that can actually rectify the wrongs and & restore #RuleofLaw. The EU should listen to & support them as allies in upholding EU values 2/2.

In today’s #EuropeanIdeasLab panel on #RuleOfLaw in Poland I spoke about how @EU_Commission &MS have looked away so long that backsliding has cemented. All fundamentals are dismantled: independent judiciary, media freedom, civic space, rights of women, LGBTIQs, refugees etc 1/2

Very glad to have spoken with @LeijtensFrontex on his 3rd day as @Frontex ED. We had a frank and fruitful exchange about the importance of increased transparency and accountability of the Agency, as well the structural changes needed to ensure fundamental rights compliance.

Today, I had a sobering yet inspiring conversation with Hanna Machińska, who was recently dismissed as Deputy Ombudsperson in Poland. It’s highly concerning to witness how the independence of the Ombudsoffice -such a vital institution for the #RuleofLaw - is now also under threat

@EP_Justice Nasiri: “I slept in forests, on streets, under bridges, in unbuilt houses and tents in the cold. And in refugee camps in between hundreds of adult men. I felt scared and lost. The journey had a huge impact on me and I asked for protection in many countries, but no-one helped me.”

@OxfamEU @GCRefugees Het is hoog tijd dat de Europese Commissie beter handhaaft tegen deze grove schendingen van Europese verplichtingen, waaronder het recht op asiel, en waarborgt dat lidstaten hulpverleners en mensenrechtenverdedigers beschermen in plaats van vervolgen. 3/3

Veel dieper dan dit kunnen we niet zinken. Om daar aandacht voor te vragen en de EU op te roepen om harder op te treden tegen pushbacks en tegen het strafbaar stellen van hulpverlening, organiseerde ik, samen met @OxfamEU en @GCRefugees, een evenement in het Europarlement. 2/3

Vorige maand stonden 24 hulpverleners, waaronder Pieter Wittenberg, terecht op Lesbos voor het bieden van noodhulp aan vluchtelingen. Dit is niet alleen in strijd met internationale verplichtingen, maar zendt ook de gevaarlijke boodschap dat medemenselijkheid wordt bestraft. 1/3

St Louis fishermen explained that, as EU ships are overfishing the Senegalese waters and BP exploits coastal gas fields, they massively lose their jobs.

Instead of building fences and sending Frontex abroad, it's high time to deeply reflect on the consequences of our own action.

Heel goed dat OM deze wrede mensenhandelaren vervolgt. Migranten zijn vogelvrij in Libië en staan bloot aan foltering en slavernij. Toch betaalt de EU de Libische kustwacht om migranten die het land ontvluchten, terug te brengen naar deze hel. Dat moet onmiddellijk stoppen.

At the border between Mauritania and Senegal, the local Red Cross receiving returned migrants lacks funds and even has to collect money from locals for food and medical care.

They get zero EU assistance, while on the contrary, local border police is given high tech equipment.
