Het werd een wat lang weekendje weg, zegt @MinPres. Hij begint met het onderstrepen van het belang van het behoud van de korting en dat de begroting gekrompen is door Brexit.

Precies dit vreesde ik: van het koppelen van de uitgaven aan het respecteren van de rechtsstaat is niets meer over. Warme woorden hierover van de premier in het debat in de Tweede Kamer, maar uiteindelijk bleek de rebate belangrijker dan de rule of law. Hoe cynisch

@EricUnen Pick your fights. Je kunt niet op alle punten winnen. Het is duidelijk waar Rutte het hardst op heeft ingezet - niet de rechtsstaat in ieder geval.

Rutte heeft zo hard gevochten voor een kleiner budget... de inhoud kwam op de tweede plek.
Minder geld voor klimaat, zorg & onderzoek.
Financiering van autocraten in Hongarije en Polen gaat door, zonder voorwaarden.

„The EUCO underlines the importance of the respect of the rule of law”.
This is the only mention of the rule of law in the entire text, which means the rule of law conditionality has successfully been defeated by the V4 and our allies.

Naast kortingen op onderzoek (keihard nodig voor onze concurrentiekracht) en gezondheid (om voorbereid te zijn op een volgende crisis), ook veel minder middelen voor de bescherming van de buitengrenzen - die extra grensbewaking die onze premier beloofde komt er zo niet...

Things are moving. Despite French push, seems like €390bn will be the figure for the grants. Now Michel will need to straighten out other outstanding parts of negotiation - including climate taeget and rule of law - to produce new negotiating draft

National vetoes merely allow single countries to hold the entire European Union hostage. It may bring short-term electoral benefits to certain government leaders, but they do profound damage to the European Union as a whole.

Again, the EU is paralysed because it doesn’t work. Fault lines North South and East West. Time for Conference on Future of Europe to move, instead of EU, to a ‘Community of Sovereign States’ - in which there is no battle for money because each state pulls up its own socks.
