There we go: voting on cars starts now.
Bas Eickhout (GroenLinks) wo 8 jun 2022, 17:22
Effort sharing adopted. Deal as struck in ENVI maintained. No surprises. We now move to land-use change; a file where additional climate ambition can be achieved.
Bas Eickhout (GroenLinks) wo 8 jun 2022, 17:10
And the votes have started again. Voting first Effort Sharing Regulation, where climate reduction targets are set for Member States. Less controversial vote, will go smooth.

Good summary Bas!
Bas Eickhout (GroenLinks) wo 8 jun 2022, 13:48
So no majority for the deal on ETS. EPP lowers the deal with the help of ECR and ID. And in the end we and S&D don’t accept that weakening of the proposal. ECR and ID also still vote against, so no majority. This shows: you can’t build deals with ECR and ID, dear EPP.

1/ Who said the European Parliament was boring, he? Emotions running high as Socialists team up with the ‘usual suspects’ (Greens, far Left and far Right) to vote against the revision of ETS - the central part of the climate package.

4/ If you break it, you fix it. So I look forward to the S&D solutions to remedy the created situation. The EPP stands ready to continue the work.
Esther de Lange (CDA) wo 8 jun 2022, 16:12
3/ Why is this so important for us? It is not about paper realities. It is about making sure that CBAM works in practice so that we protect jobs in Europe, while having the most ambitious climate laws in the world.

2/ Too bad, as there is agreement between the constructive center parties on 95% of the content in plenary. Trying to bring through a socialist-liberal amendment on CBAM without EPP was a risky strategy that failed.

@TalousKuria The discrimination of women has unfortunately been a reality for hundreds of years - and is still going on in most of the world. I hope you are fighting that with as much passion. As for this text, quota for “the underrepresented sex” are a fair tool to get to more balance.
Bas Eickhout (GroenLinks) wo 8 jun 2022, 15:02
That was voting part 1. Quite some fireworks. Apologies for all the acronyms but voting and tweeting at the same time is quite challenging. At 17hrs we do part 2. Again fireworks to be expected there; mainly on CO2 standards for cars.
Bas Eickhout (GroenLinks) wo 8 jun 2022, 14:59
On aviation the ENVI deal stays: so outgoing flights from EU will fall under ETS, phase out of free allowances by 2025 and also non-CO2 effects of aviation need to be included in the pricing. Revenues will be invested in development of Sustainable Aviation Fuels.

@TalousKuria The law says “the underrepresented sex”. So in the *highly unlikely* scenario of 60+% women on boards the quota would work in the favour of men.

Bas Eickhout (GroenLinks) wo 8 jun 2022, 14:02
Vote on Social Climate Fund is easier. Important that SMEs remain excluded. Final vote not taken to allow alignment with ETS. On CBAM no vote take, since we have the same issue on free allowances there. So ETS, Social Climate Fund and CBAM back to the ENVI committee.

Bas Eickhout (GroenLinks) wo 8 jun 2022, 13:29
So ETS is extended to maritime and commercial buildings and transport. Ambition level is slightly improved. But not good on free allowances; might even be challenged by WTO. Overall we cannot support this position of the Eur. Parliament.
