Recent werd in Belarus ook een groep vakbondsleiders gevangen gezet. En een nieuwe wet maakt zelfs doodstraf mogelijk als je kritische stem als terrorisme wordt aangemerkt. @a_jongerius riep op alle gearresteerde vakbondsleiders direct vrij te laten.👇🏼#tradeunions #vakbonden 2/2

Vandaag ook debat over Belarus. Belangrijk, want behalve volledige medeplichtigheid aan Poetins oorlog gaat het onderdrukken door Lukashenka van elke kritische stem maar door. Maar de oppositie, politieke gevangenen en het dappere verzet krijgen hun land en vrijheid terug! 1/2

1) Veel landen zijn wel zeer afhankelijk van graan uit Oekraine, Belarus en Rusland met tekorten en honger tot gevolg. Stijgende prijzen daar leiden kunnen bovendien leiden tot onrust, radicalisering en instabiliteit.

In @Europarl_NL spreken we met @Hanna_Machinska over de verschrikkelijke humanitaire situatie van migranten in Polen en aan grens met Belarus. De crisis is enorm maar er is nog steeds geen toegang tot het grensgebied en de autoriteiten schenden nationaal recht en 🇪🇺grondrechten.

Our response to Belarus’ hybrid attack was timely & effective, but more is needed.

We can’t wait for the adoption of legislation to respond to a crisis that’s happening now.

Let’s use the treaty to help MS when they need help. That is what Europe is all about!

Gênant dit. Na de sancties die snel volgden op de staatskaping boven #Belarus hebben we de @EU_Commission al in juli gevraagd zwaardere sancties voor te bereiden. Die kwamen deze maand. Maar lidstaten onderhandelen met elkaar over tal van uitzonderingen en handhaven slecht.

Indeed! We need to monitor the effect of the new sanctions closely and ensure we really cut off the regime from any resources and space to move. In the meantime continue support to the civil society in- and outside Belarus and to the political prisoners and their families. ⚪️🔴⚪️

Calais, Belarus, the Mediterranean; as long as government leaders refuse to take a decision on a common European asylum and migration package, we keep having these crises.

With clear rules and capacity, we would be able to manage well and not roll from one crisis to the next.
