What a missed opportunity. The #EUTaxonomy could have aligned finance with the Paris goals. Labelling gas as a green investment sets a low bar and risks allowing greenwashing in the financial system. 1/5

Although #CBAM is in the first place a climate measure, the trade perspective is extremely important.

Climate change leads to water shortages, extreme weather & hunger. We need to be smarter about how we use water, food & energy. Today, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) & the Netherlands organised a summit to discuss solutions. I encourage others to join this collaboration.

Spoke at the Circular Europe Days of @CEStakeholderEU.

The climate crisis is here already, and it is here to stay.

Our response should be based on three principles. Make polluters pay, act global and think social.

@timbales @CarbonMrktWatch @Sam__Vdp How can you call it a cash cow when the ultimate goal is that trading partners have their own carbon pricing policies? + revenues will not be spend on EU industries.

What about for example Turkey's new climate ambition during COP26? no possible link with CBAM?

@d_le_nen As I told the FT: Climate club should be on top of CBAM. If you have clear implicit carbon policies, this will be reflected in the number of CBAM certificates that you will need to pay. But no exemption should be granted on the grounds of implicit carbon costs.

Mohammed Chahim (PvdA) Wed 5 Jan 2022, 10:47

Indirect emissions, such as emissions from electricity, should also be covered by CBAM after the pilot phase.

This is extremely important to heighten the climate ambition of this proposal. 🌎

in reply to avatar

Mohammed Chahim (PvdA) Wed 5 Jan 2022, 10:47

The scope of the CBAM should be broadened to organic chemicals, hydrogen and polymers.

These products have the right characteristics to be covered by CBAM, and technical complexities can be overcome.

(3/10)

avatar

Mohammed Chahim (PvdA) Wed 5 Jan 2022, 10:47

Given the current climate emergency, we need a speedier phase-in of CBAM and a speedier phase-out of free allowances.

Guaranteeing free allowances until 2036 is not in line with the Union’s 2030 climate objectives. ❌

First, the ambition to stay well below 2°C and close to 1.5°C of warming.

Second, climate finance. We need to deliver the $100 billion we promised to developing countries.

Third pillar: a rulebook on international carbon markets.

Climate policies are -surprise, surprise- scapegoated for rising energy prices in EP today.

But let's stick to the facts. The rise is largely caused by gas shortages. So we need to decrease our gas dependence fast.

avatar

Esther de Lange (CDA) Wed 6 Oct 2021, 11:30

Some critics point the finger at climate-protection policies. This oversimplifies the issue. Today our ETS policy actually prices the environmental cost of CO2 emissions into electricity. EU policies incentivise producers to switch to cost-efficient alternatives.

in reply to avatar

Esther de Lange (CDA) Wed 6 Oct 2021, 11:30

There is a variety of causes for today's high energy prices. Simply put, the supply of gas and electricity is decreasing while demand is increasing. Some claim that exporters abroad are reducing their European supply in order to raise prices even higher.
