The stakes are high, but the measures inadequate. Imposing criteria on targeted advertising in election periods is much welcome, but the use of personalised advertising for disinformation won’t stop in non-election time if you only impose transparency requirements... @VeraJourova
CbC reporting requires multinationals to publish info on profits, costs and taxes in each country they operate. Currently they are only obliged to report global profits as a grouped sum. More transparency allows us to hold companies that shift profits to tax havens accountable 🔍
Next Tuesday, @sven_giegold and I will join the debate on EU Taxation and the 🇵🇹 Portuguese presidency of the EU - hosted by @AnaMartinsGomes. One issue that I will certainly raise is Country-by-Country reporting. Why is CbC reporting so extremely important? A thread👇
Thousands of illegal (!) ads ran, of which many targeting people with dubious covid19 cures.
All despite the ex-ante check...
Dear @vestager @ThierryBreton @VeraJourova voluntary codes and transparency requirements won’t help. Ban personalised ads!
And the world biggest tax🏝️? Cayman Islands, which was removed from the EU list of tax havens last month! Great the EU has a list, but it lacks something important: the world’s biggest tax havens! Only 2% of the world’s tax avoidance passes through countries on the list.
+1We NEED to shine light on how much and where companies pay tax before the right solutions arise. Together with MEPs from several political groups, I urged the Council for a fast conclusion on public Country-by-Country reporting at EU level. Transparency is key for #taxjustice
High expectations before the launch of the new pact on Migration and Asylum. Will this Pact finally break the deadlock in the European Asylum debate and ensure more solidarity and safeguards?
I welcome you to read the first blog article on my new website.
The energy transition is essentially a material transition:
from crude oil/gas ➡️ critical materials for a.o. batteries and sustainable hydrogen production.
Crucial that the Commission launched this Action Plan:we need more transparency and security for #rawmaterials
#RawMaterials are essential for Europe to lead the green and digital transition and remain the world's first industrial continent.
Today we launch our Action Plan to make our raw materials supply more secure and sustainable: europa.eu/!kB76BV
+1Commission President @vonderleyen promises to deliver upon
- reinforced Youth Guarantee
- fair labour conditions for platform workers
- new occupational health & safety strategy
- binding pay transparency
When she sticks to this, she will find me on her side to fight for it!
Tomorrow @Europarl_EN will call for privacy proof use of contact tracing apps:
- not obligatory
- no central storage, but only decentral on the device
- full transparency on the functioning of these apps (open source)
- full transparency on commercial interests ⬇️
Public trust is critical in this time of uncertainty. A pan-EU approach for apps in fight against corona must be 100% privacy proof:
- decentralised storage and matching of data happening on device (#DP3T), not in cloud prone to risk of abuse
- never obligatory /1
We need to do everything we can to fight against the covid19-virus, but an infringement of our fundamental rights goes beyond that boundary @ThierryBreton We need complete transparency on how you used our data and the assurance that it won’t happen again politico.eu/article/coroan…
Citizens should not be fined for requesting transparency. @Frontex is trying to deter citizens from requesting access to documents by making them pay the full costs of a legal challenge. Unacceptable. Transparency is part&parcel of democracy. We want answers from @EU_Commission👇
EU rules exist for a reason: promote EU transparency + credibility and prevent excessive lobbying influence. This is much needed. See for example my article from 2 weeks ago on cynical lobbying action to postpone a key sustainable finance initiative. euractiv.com/section/econom…
The @council is co-legislator, but it doesn’t apply the same standards of transparency as @Europarl_EN. In particular the “trilogue” method is a black box. Will you make proposals to make legislative negotiations open? Colleague @PDurandOfficiel asks @VeraJourova #EPhearings2019
+2Facebook reports that "5% of monthly active accounts are fake" and they disabled 2.19billion fake accounts in Q1 2019.
So how much of the ~$56 Billion yearly ad revenue is Facebook refunding to advertisers since at least 5% of it was fraudulent?
Useful but still scratching the surface: 1) onus on user 2) very basic falsehoods 3) no bot transparency 4) no messenger transparency 5) no funding transparency 6) no algorithmic accountability > Strengthening our approach to deliberately misleading voters blog.twitter.com/en_us/topics/c…
Thanks to @TI_EU for their excellent work on the conflict of interests case relating to Czech PM Babis. As MEPs for transparency & integrity we say: the taxpayer is entitled to full investigation of potential fraud. Let justice be done! See our statement: itcointergroup.eu/let-justice-do…
Ensuring people are not robbed of their democratic rights is key: 1) stresstests of election tech 2) transparency of bots, disinformation, campaign finance & business models 3) medialiteracy 4) awareness for political parties, candidates & journo’s are some steps we can take
@BrownColinM @GUENGL We asked. According to the UNCITRAL secretariat, it is up to the delegations themselves to decide whom they wish to have in their delegation. So it is not the Treaties, it is the EU delegation who do not want MEPs on board. These negotiations would benefit from more transparency.
