On migration: The human rights situation at our EU borders is a disgrace. I urge the Presidency to stop allowing pushbacks; new legislation should not undermine but protect the right to asylum and ensure equal responsibility-sharing for refugees among the Member States.(2/5)

Today, Emmanuel Macron presented the priorities for the French Council Presidency in the European Parliament. I call upon the Presidency to finally turn words about our common European values into actions. This should at least include the following priorities.(1/5)

Since Lukashenko started instrumentalising migrants, the EU itself frames migration merely as security threat. Proposed adaptations to Schengen reaffirm this.

A geopolitical crisis needs a geopolitical solution. Not legalising pushbacks and tearing down rights of people in need.

Calais, Belarus, the Mediterranean; as long as government leaders refuse to take a decision on a common European asylum and migration package, we keep having these crises.

With clear rules and capacity, we would be able to manage well and not roll from one crisis to the next.

I can’t underline this enough – the millions that are given to third countries under the header of the EU’s migration deals, should be conditional to human rights compliance.

Especially since the current scheme facilitates human rights violations, as we see happening in Libya.
