Assistance to refugees should never be criminalised and journalists should be free to do critical reporting.
That’s why the case of @IBeugel in #Greece needs to be clarified. The @EU_Commission should verify and ensure compliance with EU law.

During the final Frontex hearing just now, I asked the Exec. Director how he intends to follow up on the #pushbacks in Greece. According to him, Frontex already followed up.
Apparently for @Frontex a denial by the Greek authorities is sufficient to ensure accountability.

Proud to be from the Benelux. Finally Member States are now speaking out explicitly. Developments in Hungary are threatening the European Union more than Greece 10 years ago, and countries like Germany were not holding back by then at all.

A lot of cynicism in one letter. Northern Member States finally call upon the Commission to enforce the rights of refugees in Greece. So that they can return them to Greece. ‘In a spirit of European solidarity’.

@Tineke_Strik Thank you for all your interesting but also worrying updates from Greece last week about the situation on the ground and for addressing the accountability for pushbacks. Looking forward to the #FSWG recommendations to improve @Frontex governance and accountability.

+1Productive meetings with the Greek Ombudsman and ngo’s on human rights violations at the borders. We need independent investigations to ensure accountability for pushbacks. Current reporting and monitoring systems are not sufficient.

This week I am in Greece to discuss the situation of refugees on the Greek islands with NGO's, lawyers and authorities.
I just met with immigration lawyer Dimitrios Choulis, who is courageously supporting many of the most vulnerable asylum seekers on Samos.

We will assess:
- effectiveness & transparency of their 'Complaints Mechanism'
- role and independence of their ‘Fundamental Rights Officer’
