Today, I had a sobering yet inspiring conversation with Hanna Machińska, who was recently dismissed as Deputy Ombudsperson in Poland. It’s highly concerning to witness how the independence of the Ombudsoffice -such a vital institution for the #RuleofLaw - is now also under threat

Glad the @EU_Commission stands its ground on freezing 7.5 bln in cohesion funds. #RuleOfLaw concerns did not magically disappear in Hungary. A hasty release would only reward Orbán’s blackmail. Now it’s up to Member States to stand firm as well & not succumb to Orbán’s pressure.

Yesterday eve (22/8) the Hungarian government sent a letter under the RoL conditionality Reg after the Commission earlier communicated its intention to trigger it and propose cutting funds.

Rechtsstatelijk is NL het lachertje van de EU.
De aanval is de beste verdediging moet #Rutte gedacht hebben toen hij over de #RuleOfLaw van Polen en Hongarije begon bij het weggeven van tientallen miljarden euros coronasteun van de NL belastingbetaler.

The Polish body to select and promote judges is under political control. A few days ago, it selected a person as president that has a reputation of violating the independence of judges in Krakow. Dialogue with PIS is useless. Release of funds is no option. ruleoflaw.pl/a-war-is-being…

#Hungary is now invited to reply to the #EC’s concerns.
